Alcove Beds

Via The Enchanted Home. Design by Nicky Haslam

Wintertime here forces me to spend a lot of time inside, and every year I think it will be the perfect opportunity to organize and prioritize before warm weather draws me back outside again. But with the dark mornings and long nights the impulse to hibernate constantly threatens to trump all of my good intentions. A few mornings ago, I woke up to blowing snow, a stiff north wind and frigid temperatures that refused to budge all day. My instant reaction was to sink deeper into the covers & ignore the blustery start to the day for the warmth of my cozy bed.

Have you ever noticed how children gravitate to snug nooks and crannies for playing? Give my two a big blanket and some chairs to support it, & they will play happily for the longest time. Last weekend I attended a 7-year-old little girl's birthday party that was fabulously done and lots of fun, but even with all that there was to amuse, imagine where the giggling little party-goers ended up after the cake was eaten and the presents were opened: under a table covered by a big tablecloth just the right length for making it "tented", happily inspecting all of the party loot.

Somehow that love of shelter doesn't seem to entirely end with childhood. Don't these alcove beds look like the perfect places to sleep, read & lounge--- and ignore the calls of duty while the wind and snow blow furiously outside? If you're claustrophobic the appeal of an alcove bed may be a bit lost on you, I admit. But if not, I can hardly think of a more inviting, fun and cozy place to snooze.

Jefferson's bedroom at Monticello, Charlottesville, VA

Thomas Jefferson designed alcove beds for the rooms at Monticello after returning from France where he admired French alcove beds for their space-saving qualities. In this photo, above, the alcove bed in Jefferson's bedroom is open on both sides for easy access to his library, viewed beyond the bed.

The quintessential bunk room, at a vacation cottage or beach house, is the perfect place for alcove beds. Draperies on each bed conveniently add privacy.

Many traditional alcove beds are enclosed by wooden panels with a narrow opening or door in the center. But an alcove bed can also be created where there is just space enough for the length of a bed plus a shelf or small table by adding draperies from the ceiling  to the floor.

Attic bedrooms offer plenty of nooks for alcove beds with charming effect.

Campagne Decoration

Things to consider when having an alcove bed designed & installed are a good light source, an air conditioning/heating vent to keep the space from becoming stuffy and unpleasant, a shelf or two for placing objects if the design of the bed does not allow for easy access to a night stand or table outside of the alcove. 1. I love the idea of hibernating in the winter. I have been a bit under the weather lately and so have been home for almost a week. I have to say I have loved it! Staying home when it's chilly outside can be very cozy. The alcove bedding you featured would be the ultimate retreat. I have been working on my needlepoint pillow and reading some very good books. Nothing wrong with staying indoors in the winter time!

    1. There is something fun and romantic about these images. It would also be fun as a child to have a bed like this. You could pretend you were in a fort or a hide away.

  5. Keri, this is such a beautifully put together post! How dreamy. I must confess to having to get up earlier than usual today with a very busy day ahead and when I saw your alcove corners of paradise, well, suffice to say I just wanted to head straight back to bed! But stay up I must. Jefferson's bedroom boasts the most delicious pink counterpane... I cannot shake off my love of pink.

Have a beautiful snowy, cold day and just pretend you are The Snow Queen!

  6. How deliciously cozy these all are! The scary thing would be that it would be REALLY hard to get out of bed if I had such an inviting little spot to retreat to. And yes so agree about kids and their natural inclination to want to stay in the small cozy, cocoon like spaces such as these. I think as you said especially during the winter, we particularly crave little restful nooks like these......

  9. I have always wanted one of those. They are so cozy and girly. I don't think my husband would enjoy such a thing, so I guess I have missed my chance.

  12. These all look fabulous and would be divinely cosy in winter. We are having such a heat wave at the moment that I feel hot just looking at all the drapery around these beds. I just need air around me. Maybe a winter and a summer bedroom is the answer! Lovely post. x Sharon

  14. Though they are looking beautiful but such kind of beds can take up a lot of area of your room specially when you want other things to add like dresser, sofa, computer table and cupboard, if you have a big room you can surely go for these.

    1. Yes, an alcove bed definitely requires the right room.
